Virtual Presentation Simulation
Enspire Learning created a presentation-building-and-delivery simulation to train a major technology company’s sales force in the art of online presentation delivery.
Challenge
This networking technology company desired an improvement in sales presentation skills, particularly when presenting highly technical content. More specifically, they wanted salespeople to give more effective presentations using company-developed virtual media. They believed that using their own technology in all presentations would lead to increased sales of their products. But if their salespeople weren’t capable of producing high-quality virtual presentations, the results would be doubly bad.
Approach
The curriculum consisted of three e-learning modules, three simulations, and three coached practice sessions. The modules followed peer learners interacting with online presentation technology. A series of video vignettes demonstrated course skills in a humorous, yet realistic, fashion. Enspire rolled out a new presentation-building-and-delivery simulation to show the real-world effects of presentation choices.
The simulation allowed Enspire to upload company-unique Microsoft PowerPoint™ slides and illustrate each slide’s effect on a virtual audience. The presentation simulations spur learners to reconsider their presentation strategies. After playing through each simulation, learners engage in an offline practice activity – building and delivering a practice presentation for their managers. A coaching module gives guidelines for evaluating learner performance and allows the mentor to provide suggestions for improvement.
Outcome
The virtual presentations curriculum was released to the company’s entire sales force with a rich marketing trailer. The course won a Gold Brandon Hall Excellence in Learning Award for Custom Content in 2007 and was named Training magazine’s 2007 Soft Skills/Business Simulation Project of the Year through the inaugural Training in Action awards.
