Two for Tuesday: Demotivating Rewards and Writing Daily

1) Find a group of kids who enjoy drawing, then start giving them rewards for drawing. Soon enough, they’ll stop drawing as much. Research has shown that rewarding people for activities they already feel motivated to do can actually reduce intrinsic motivation. This is an important thing to remember as our industry increasingly explores the use of gamification in learning experiences.

2) Writing a weekly blog post has proven to be challenging, however this post is a good reminder of the benefits of writing regularly. It promotes reflection, increases creativity, builds networks, and more. Personally, I find that the greatest benefit is that it helps clarify my ideas. This is particularly true when I give presentations — I’ll often write out every word that I intend to say in a script format. I don’t use the script during my presentations, but the exercise helps me fill in gaps and organize my thoughts.
